Notice to government on local body polls

The Madras High Court has issued notice to the government on a plea moved by the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) to hold the ensuing urban and rural local body elections 2016 as per the 2011 census.

A division bench comprising Justice Huluvadi Rames and Justice MV Muralidharan ordered notice to the State and directed the registry to club it along with a similar plea moved by DMK at the next hearing on August 19. 

PMK represented by its state deputy general secretary A Tamilarasu had contended that the State government in its policy note for 2012-13 for rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department for reorganisation of panchayat boundaries on the ratio of population specified in the 2011 census. 

But the government hurriedly introduced two bills on the basis of the outcome of the results in the assembly elections as it apprehended that the local body election would go in favour of the opposition and other parties.
