On December 12, Aavin, the trademark of Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited, which supplies milk to the city, said that it had maintained a normal supply even on the day of the cyclone. As many as 11.49 lakh litres of milk was supplied to the city on December 12. Out of this, 7.56 lakh litres were supplied through 132 routes while the remaining 3.93 lakh litres were dispensed through wholesale dealers.

“The milk supply in Chennai metro is completely normal. Apart from this regular stock, extra supply has been made to ensure that milk is available in all parlours of Chennai metro throughout the day,” said a press release.

The statement added that all three metro diaries at Madhavaram, Ambattur and Sholinganallur had full generator backup and normal production of milk was under progress. Aavin will ensure that 11.50 lakh litres of milk, it’s full supply, will be available to customers on the morning of December 13 as well.

Even as the restaurants across the city shut shop, Amma Canteens came to the rescue of those stranded in the rain, without food. The AIADMK Twitter handle tweeted, “Amma canteen is open throughout the city, food will be provided free of cost to all.” This isn’t the first time that the government-run initiative has reached out to the needy. Less than a week ago, soon after the passing away of late CM J Jayalalithaa, the canteen remained open on December 6 even as other eateries remained shut.
