Metro rail introduces cab, share auto feeder services

In a move that would make Metro travel more accessible and comfortable, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on Saturday introduced cab feeder services at five select Metro transit hubs and share autos at seven stations on a trial basis to provide last mile connectivity for passengers.

With a nominal fare of Rs 15 and Rs 10 per person for cabs and share autos respectively, Metro rail passengers could now cover about 3km around the stations to reach their homes or any other destination.

The cab services were launched in Koyambedu, Alandur, Anna nagar East, AG-DMS and Vadapalani, while the share autos were launched in Ashok Nagar, Alandur, Ekkaduthangal, Guindy, Koyambedu, St Thomas Mount and Thirumangalam.

CMRL sources said these feeder services have been introduced to provide last-mile connectivity for the passengers getting down at Metro stations.

The cabs and share autos would be operated right through the day from 6.30 am to 9.30 pm with a pickup and drop of every half-an-hour. The cab feeder services were launched on a trial basis for six months.

Based on the response, feedback and passenger patronage, the cab feeder services would be increased with a frequency of 10-15 minutes in accordance with the train timings.

A private agency has been appointed for the job, the sources said. Welcoming the CMRL’s initiative as it would provide better accessibility for passengers, one of the commuters wanted this to be introduced in all metro stations.

“Not many stations have been covered. More Metro stations should be covered with this facility,” the commuter said.
