The police said that M Ravi (38), a resident of Vyasarpadi who is a contract staff doing housekeeping work at the government hospital, was in the emergency ward when a man approached him asking him to step out for talks.

Even as they were talking near the parking lot inside the hospital, the visitor suddenly took out a knife and started attacking Ravi. Ravi ran into the hospital building to escape, but the man chased and continued to attacked him, said those who witnessed the incident.

Shocked by this, patients and visitors ran away from there screaming for help. On information, personnel from the police booth inside the hospital rushed to the spot and nabbed the attacker. Ravi, who suffered injuries on his head and shoulders, was admitted to the same hospital for treatment.

After a preliminary investigation, the attacker was identified as Ayyappan of Tondiarpet, who too suffered injuries on his neck. The police said Ayyappan was in a relationship with a widow, who is working as a housekeeper at the hospital. Recently she broke up with Ayyappan and started staying with Ravi. This irked him leading the assault, said the police.
