The arrested person was identified as M Vinoth from Kavanapuduchery near Tiruporur, from whom police seized two smartphones. A few days ago, Udayaraj (26) from Perunkoli village in Kancheepuram near Tiruporur was sleeping outside his house after keeping the mobile phone next to him. When he woke up the next day, Udayaraj found that someone had stolen his phone. He filed a complaint at Tiruporur police station.

Later, Udayaraj came to know that the person who stole his phone was messaging the women contacts, asking them for their profile pictures. Shocked to learn this, Udayaraj informed the Tiruporur police. Police then located the towers linked to the mobile phone signal and identified the SIM card used in the phone. They identified the phone thief as Vinoth on Monday.

When they checked Vinoth’s house, police found two smartphones. After stealing the mobile phones, instead of selling it off immediately, Vinoth would send messages to the women whose contacts have been saved in the phones, police said. He would save their profile pictures and sell the mobile phone only after a few days.

Police believe that Vinoth, who was sent out of a private firm in Uthiramerur after he sent abusive messages to his colleagues, could have stolen many phones.

The Tiruporur police arrested him and remanded in judicial custody.
