Madurai school bags 12 golds in divisional-level boxing tournament

Alameen Higher Secondary School at K.Pudhur in Madurai has produced boxing champions as recently 12 students from the school had won gold medals in various categories at the Divisional Level Boxing tournament and have been selected for the state-level boxing tournament.

Divisional level boxing event was conducted recently at Madurai and more than 450 students from 120 schools participated across the southern districts. In the event, 12 students from Alameen school won gold medal and another student won silver. All the 12 students who won gold medals were selected to the state- level boxing tournament to be conducted at Villupuram next month.

Physical Education Teacher (PET) of the school, Hamid, said that the competition was conducted in three different age categories such as, U-14, U-17 and U-19. The age categories were further divided into various sub-categories based on their body weight. He further claimed that his students were trained rigorously. The sessions used to commence at 6 am. There used to be a evening session after school till 8.30 pm. There was good support from the parents too claimed Hamid. He said that important part of the training was diet. The weight of the students was kept static. If their weight increases after they had won the division tournament they would be disqualified in the state tournament claimed Hamid. Head Master of the school, Sheik Nabi, claimed that he felt extremely proud about the performance of the students in the divisional level and is hoping for a similar performance at the state level.
