The victims, R Sriram (18) of Villupuram and his friend Manoj, were rushed to Apollo Hospital on Greams Road. Sriram is being treated at the Intensive Care Unit, said sources.

Police said that Sriram and Manoj are second-year law students of a private college in Poonamallee and were returning to the hostel after having dinner at their friend Irfan’s house in Anna Nagar. Around 10.30 pm, a speeding autorickshaw hit their car near Koyambedu, after which the duo was involved in an argument with the auto driver.

A few minutes later, Sriram and Manoj stopped their car near Kodambakkam and to their shock, the auto driver and his men were waiting there. When they were talking, a man sitting inside the auto slashed Sriram’s wrist with a machete. They also attacked Manoj and fled the spot. Based on their complaint, Kodambakkam police have registered a case and are searching for the gang.
