Labourer drowns in sewage tank

A contract labourer of Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewage Board died after falling into a sewage tank on Monday.

The incident took place when V Mari (33) of Pulianthope was working at the Metro Water office in Periyamet.

“On Monday, Mari was repairing the steps of a sewage tank in the premises. He accidentally slipped and fell inside the tank,” the police said. His colleagues tried to rescue him, but could not trace him. Immediately, Fire and Rescue Services personnel were alerted, who rushed to the spot and managed to rescue Mari out of the sewage tank. “However, he died soon after that,” police said. 

Periyamet police sent the body to Rajiv Gandhi Government General hospital for autopsy. Police filed a case and are investigating.
