Bombay Jayashri has taken Chennai to her heart. A popular vocalist, she has trained in both Carnatic and Hindustani music. Remaining faithful to her classical training under the legendary Guru Lalgudi Jayaraman, she has knitted together different genres of music in her repertoire.  Simply dressed, Jayashri loses herself with eyes closed in the ‘manodharma’ of her music. With her soulful Abhangs, she can evoke ‘the Divine’ before hundreds of fans. Her willingness to experiment helped her enter film music. Her songs for composers like A R Rahman and Ilaiyaraaja have been chart toppers. The first Tamil song nominated for an Oscar was a lullaby sung by Jayashri for the Hollywood film, Life of Pi. Jayashri and TM Krishna collaborated to create a film, Margazhi Ragam, which was shot in the format of a Carnatic kutcheri. This was an innovative step, designed to take a concert to a wider audience in a theatre-styled setting. She and Krishna also conduct an annual festival for students of music. Hitham is her charitable trust that is focusing on two projects that are very close to her heart: it works with the Ability Foundation to take music to autistic children, and another based in Manjakudi. “My students and I teach music regularly to 300 village children,” she says.
