Govt allots Rs 22 cr to civic body for pandemic works

The State government allotted Rs 22.3 crore to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to undertake COVID-19 works.

The Government Order (GO) issued in this regard stated that to undertake the works to control the spread of the pandemic in Chennai, the officials of GCC had submitted a proposal seeking financial assistance. Though the proposal had sought a fund of Rs 70.9 crore, the State government allotted Rs 22.3 crore “after careful consideration”, the order added.

Out of the total allocation, the cost of purchasing personal protective equipment (PPEs), masks and carrying out COVID-19 tests form the major share, with Rs 9.4 crore being earmarked for these. The government has also sanctioned Rs 6.3 crore towards transportation and food arrangements. The authorities have been using vehicles belonging to MTC and TNSTC to transport GCC workers and other labourers from Chennai to various parts of the State.

In addition to these, Rs 3.48 crore has been allotted towards purchasing disinfection materials, machinery and related consumables. Similarly, Rs 3.07 crore has been allotted for manpower expenses, especially for engaging X-ray technicians, lab technicians and data entry operators on contract basis.
