Gold worth Rs 33 lakh concealed in vaseline, hair gel recovered

Customs officials seized gold worth Rs 33.3 lakh at the Chennai airport on Monday. It was concealed in jars of vaseline and hair gel.

On Sunday night, based on intelligence, Jinka Sudhakara (46) of Andhra Pradesh, who arrived from Kuwait, was intercepted at the exit on suspicion of carrying gold. On searching his checked-in baggage, the officials found 16 gold cut bits in two small plastic containers of Vaseline. In total, 365 grams of gold valued at Rs 19.14 lakh was recovered and seized.

In another case, Thamimun Ansari (33) of Chennai, who arrived from Dubai, was intercepted at the exit. On examination of his checked-in baggage, nine hair gel tubes were found. As they were unusually heavy, officials cut open them and found 270 grams of gold valued at Rs 14.16 lakh.

In total, 635 grams of gold valued at Rs 33.3 lakhs was recovered and seized under the Customs Act. Further investigation is on.
