Fresh seizure in Theni

A day after the haul of ‘drug’ chocolates at Kovilpatti, food safety officials on Saturday effected a similar seizure at Theni. The confiscated stock was ghutka (chewing tobacco) chocolates.

The Saturday’s seizure was part of the intensified raids across Southern districts after the Chennai and Kovilapatti incidents. In Theni district, the inspection team was led by Suguna, a top official from Food Safety Department.

During the searches in one of the godowns at Banglamedu several packets of ghutka chocolates were seized. When the trader was questioned he claimed that the seized consignment was sample sent by a Mumbai firm for sale.

Officials subsequently lodged a complaint with the police against the trader. Officials claimed that on the cover of the toffees it was only mentioned as ghutka, but the real ingredients could be determined only after tests.

Even sale of ghutka chocolates is banned in the State, officials added. The food safety officials also claimed that the raid would continue in all the blocks and all the shops located close to educational institutions, in particular, would be checked.
