Fire guts plastic recycling unit in Kodungaiyur

Plastic products and wooden materials worth several lakhs of rupees were gutted after a fire broke out at a plastic recycling unit near Kodungaiyur in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Around 2 am, security guards at the single-storey building in Sidco Nagar noticed smoke emanating from the first floor of the building and immediately alerted the fire control room. Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Vyasarpadi, Korukkupet, Washermenpet, Manali, Madhavaram, Vepery and Egmore rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after five hours. None was injured in the accident.


Apart from 10 fire tenders, an equal number of tanker lorries from Madhavaram and Manali Metro Water stations were deployed in the operation.


Kodungaiyur police have registered a case and are probing the cause of the fire.


“The building belongs to one Vignesh of Kodungaiyur. There is a steel company, a shop that rents vessels for functions like marriage, and a furniture shop on the ground floor, while the first floor has a plastic recycling unit, where used plastics were being converted into pipes,” said police.
