The thermocol and sponge manufacturing unit in Pondhur village near Sriperumbudur caught fire on Wednesday morning. The police said that the fire started from the scrap room in the factory and it spread to the rest of the building.

Fire and rescue teams from Kancheepuram and Sriperumbudur rushed to the spot and doused the fire in two hours. The police said that there were no casualties.

Residents of the area said that there was a similar incident there the previous year. They said that the factory does not dispose of the scraps. It is being stored there for several months and that is the reason for the fire. The Sriperumbudur police have registered a case and inquiring into it.
