Sources said that the victims, Velmurugan and his daughter, Nivedha, from Nallamalaikottai in Dindigul district, were waiting for the bus at Moolachathiram stop on Monday morning. At that time a Madurai-bound onion-laden lorry from Tirupur made a speedy turn. Owing to the heavy load and sharp swerve, the vehicle lost balance, careened off the road and fell on Velmurugan and Nivedha. Immediately, locals and others present near the spot tried to lift the lorry and rescue the duo. Some onlookers alerted the Fire and Rescue Department and team arrived at the spot.

After a hard struggle, fire service personnel with the help of locals lifted the vehicle up to some inches and pulled out the duo. Immediately, both Velmurugan and Nivedha were sent to a hospital. The traffic on Palani-Dindigul Road was affected for nearly an hour.

Pointing out that accidents have become a frequent occurrence at that spot, residents demanded the officials to put up a speed breaker to regulate vehicles turning at a high speed.
