Police said the youth had been suffering from severe depression for some days as he was finding it difficult to find a job here after returning from Canada about three years ago. Police said Sathyakumar (30), a resident of TVS Avenue, Anna Nagar West, picked up his mother Jyothipriya and threw her into an abandoned well near his house. He then jumped into the well, stood on top of his mother and ensured that she died. 

Neighbours and Jyothipriya’s daughter Usharani rushed to the spot and cried for help. On being alerted, Police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot and picked up Sathyakumar and Jyothipriya from the well. Jyothipriya was rushed to the hospital where she was declared brought dead. Following her death, police arrested Sathyakumar. Sathyakumar had worked as an engineer in Canada but returned to Chennai three years ago and was unemployed here for the last three years.
