CHENNAI: City police on Saturday arrested two persons on murder charges after an elderly man they attacked after an argument in their neighbourhood succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased was identified as Murugesan (67), a resident of ‘B’ Kalyanapuram in Vyasarpadi. Police said that Murugesan’s neighbours often picked up a quarrel with him over petty issues.

On the night of September 6 (Tuesday), Murugesan’s neighbour, Arulselvan picked up an argument with the elderly man and the verbal duel soon escalated into a brawl involving both their family members.

Arulselvan and his family members ganged up and assaulted Murugesan, in which the 67-year-old got seriously injured.

Police registered a case of attempt to murder against Arulselvan then and moved the elderly man to a hospital.

On Friday (September 9) night, Murugesan succumbed to his injuries without responding to treatment after which police altered the case to murder.

Vyasarpadi police booked E Arulselvan (38) and his brother-in-law, R Manimaran (36) on murder charges and arrested them. They were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.

Search is on for two women relatives of Arulselvan, police said.
