DRI seizes Rs 62.26L in foreign currency

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Friday seized Rs. 62.26 lakh worth assorted foreign currencies at the Chennai airport from five passengers bound for Colombo.

The DRI team profiled 27 passengers on information regarding currency smuggling and found five out of them were trying to smuggled out assorted foreign currencies like US dollars, Euros, Singapore dollars and Thailand bhat.

The carriers had told the DRI team that money was handed over to them outside Chennai airport, offering financial benefit for carrying it to Colombo. The smugglers said they were directed to hand over the currency to persons on board the flight to Colombo. The currency notes were meant to be smuggled to Singapore via Colombo.

Similarly, another DRI team seized 1.2 kg gold bars from a passenger who landed at Tiruchy airport. The passenger was carrying 12 gold bars, each weighing 100 grams in a passport holder. The officials then seized the gold and arrested the smuggler.
