Delta farmers to besiege RBI on Nov 29

The Delta farmers have decided to besiege the Reserve Bank of India office in Chennai on November 29 as the demonetisation has affected the functioning of all the 23 Central Cooperative Societies in the state which had hit the farming activities badly.

According to Nel R Jayaraman, Coordinator of save Our rice campaign, more than 90 per cent of the farmers were depended on Central Cooperative Societies for crop and jewel loans for undertaking their farming works.

However, the recent demonetisation have almost crippled the functioning of the societies. The farmers alleged that the RBI which has been initiating many steps t ensure smooth transactions in the nationalised and private banks, was least bothered about the cooperative societies.

In TN these societies have been the farmer’s lifeline, they said.
