Customs seizes gold worth Rs 1.27 cr, 2 passengers held

Customs seized gold worth Rs 1.27 crore at Chennai airport and arrested two passengers.

Officials intercepted Sultan Sahul Hameed (24), Mohamed Sadam Hussain (29), Shagul Hamid (63) of Ramanathapuram, Basheer Ahmed (35) of Sivaganga and Rathnasiri (35) of Sri Lanka, who arrived from Colombo, on Sunday night. They recovered 18 bundles of gold paste concealed in their rectums. On extraction, the gold weighed about 2.59 kg worth Rs 88.88 lakh.


In another incident, officials who were checking the passengers from Dubai intercepted Syed Kamardeen (33) of Ramanathapuram. On search, two bundles of gold paste weighing 332 grams were recovered from his rectum. The passenger was arrested.


Similarly, officials intercepted Mohamed Sharkhan (21), Mohamed Jinna (30) and Ansari (46) from Ramanathapuram, who arrived from Dubai. On personal search, the officials recovered six bundles of gold in paste weighing 564 grams form their rectums. A repeat-offender was arrested.
