Eshwar Vikas is the CEO, and his college mate from SRM University, Sudeep Sabat is the co-founder of Mukunda Foods – the creators of Dosamatic, marketed as the world’s very first counter-top dosa maker.
Having launched in 2013, the firm, based in Bengaluru, exported its machines to over 16 nations and has sold about 600 machines so far. It now wants to introduce a home-edition of the Dosamatic, and has major plans for Tamil Nadu as well. Eshwar tells us, “Over the past few months, people’s interest in our product has grown tremendously. We tied up with a distributor, primarily to concentrate on South India.”
Between 100-150 units of the commercial model of the Dosamatic, priced at Rs 1.8 lakh (exclusive of taxes) is sold on a monthly basis, according to Eshwar. The international market makes up for 30 per cent of the sales. “To make the home edition a feasible proposition, we would need to sell at least 5,000 to 10,000 units each month. We will need more funding in order to make that dream a reality,” says Eshwar. He forecasts that if everything goes per plan, the table-top home edition of the Dosamatic could be released in the early months of 2017.
Eshwar is a strong proponent of the Make in India initiative and says his company is keen on generating employment and improving livelihoods of people in India. The firm has tied up with ICICI Bank and S&S Enterprises (Dosamatic dealers for TN), to identify and support deserving individuals and women’s self-help groups and help them set up food kiosks/ outlets using the unit.
He explains, “Mukunda Foods will aid in the skill development aspects of this pilot project, which will be implemented in 10 to 20 locations. Our focus is on hand-holding individuals and imparting expertise on the usage of the machine. They will be provided with financial assistance by ICICI and we are also looking at facilitating Mudra loans and micro finance loans for them. Once the pilot project takes off, we can look at a full-fledged rollout of this initiative in about 200 locations.”
