The deceased, Gunasekaran (62) of Melpatti Ponnappan street lost his job as a security guard after the lockdown came into effect and struggled to take care of his wife Selvi (58). The couple has three sons and their third son Sridhar stayed with them, while the other two lived separately with their families.

While Sridhar was addicted to alcohol and often quarrelled with his parents for money, the other sons allegedly did not take care of them. Dejected over not being able to pay even the rent, the couple hanged themselves in the house on Wednesday night.

Sridhar, who reached the house late, found his parents hanging from the ceiling and alerted the neighbours. On information, the Sembium police rushed to the spot and retrieved their bodies for post-mortem examination.

In the suicide note retrieved from the house, the couple had stated that nobody was responsible for their decision and requested the police deparment to carry out their funeral, treating them as destitute. While their bodies were taken to the Otteri crematorium on Thursday evening, the Sembium police visited the crematorium and paid last respects to the couple.
