Civic body seals tea shop in Periamet for using banned plastic cup

The Public Health department officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation sealed a tea shop at Periamet, after the shop owner was caught using banned plastic cups for the third time in a row during the inspection and for operating without the mandatory licence.

An official release from the Corporation said on Wednesday that officials from Royapuram Zone inspected the shops at Sydenhams Road at Periamet on Tuesday, and found a tea shop using the plastic-coated cups.


“The tea shop was already fined twice for using the plastic-coated cups. Having been caught for a third time, the owner was fined Rs 5,000. Moreover, the shop did not have the Corporation’s trade license,” the release said.


The Corporation started awareness on the plastic ban that has been in force from January 1 last year, and have begun imposing fine on those using banned plastics from June 17, 2019. “In the Royapuram Zone, the Public Health department officials are conducting the raid on daily basis and imposing the fines violators. As on date, inspection was carried out on 18,991 shops and collected fines to the tune of Rs 18.01 lakh. They have seized 42 tonnes of banned plastic products,” the statement added.
