City, suburbs get bountiful rain overnight

The city recorded one of the best rainfalls this year on Monday, with some areas receiving as high as 100 mm rain, said weather bloggers, while the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) here has issued a forecast that the rain that soaked the city is likely to continue for two more days.

Though the weather stations in Nungambakkam (37.3) and Meenambakkam (24.2mm) recorded only moderate rains, it was as high as 10 cm at Tiruvallur while Kancheepuram received 7 cm.


According to popular weather blogger Pradeep John, this was one of the heaviest spell in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur region since December first week. Thamaraipakkam recorded 97 mm, while it was 67 mm near Sholinganallur, 64 at Korattur Anaicut, 59 mm at Sholinganallur and Tiruttani.


Interestingly, Tiruttani was last in news after recorded 44 degrees Celsius in the first week of May.


The heavy showers received on Monday night also brought down the temperatures in the city. On Tuesday, the maximum temperature went down by 1.2 degree Celsius and 1.7 degree Celsius at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam, which recorded 36.2 degrees Celsius and 37.1 degrees Celsius respectively.


Light to moderate rain is expected at a few places in the State as more days of scattered rainfall are likely for next five days. RMC issued a heavy rainfall warning for the next 48 hours, stating that heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Virudhunagar, Theni, Vellore, The Nilgiris, Dindigul, Tiruvannamalai, Nilgiris and Coimbatore.


In the city, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy for next 48 hours, followed by moderate rain or thundershower in some areas during evening or night. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36 degree Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius respectively.
