Christmas was celebrated with traditional gaiety and fervour in Tamil Nadu with scores of believers thronging churches for prayers and mass

The birth of Lord Jesus was ushered in by the faithfuls, whothronged popular churches across the State, including at Santhome here andVailakanni in Nagappatinam district for prayers and midnight masses, followedby meeting and greeting their friends and relatives. At Kanyakumari, a sectionof fishermen celebrated Christmas mid-sea on boats. Regarding this practice,they said that such a celebration was held to recognise the sea’s importance inensuring them their livelihood. Homes were decorated with stars and Christmastrees. Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, DMKPresident M Karunanidhi and other leaders have extended Christmas greetings.
