While YouTubers, as well as TikTok and Instagram celebrities, do paid promotion for various products and apps as part of their content on social media, the cybercrime police said they can take action only if there is any complaint lodged against such promotions and added that there are agencies to monitor such promotions online.

However, several social media celebrities have landed in prison for other crimes. For instance, PUBG Madan who shot to fame through his live PUBG sessions on YouTube was arrested by the Chennai cybercrime police after complaints of his sexual remarks on women in his videos were reported. Similarly, TikTok fame Surya of Madurai has been arrested for allegedly running the flesh trade.
