The incident happened on April 10 when the deceased, Naveen Kanna, a Class 5 student, had come to the mall along with his elder cousin to play games.

Naveen Kanna’s father Sanil Kumar in his complaint to Anna Salai police had stated that his son’s bag got stuck in the escalator leading to the accident. However, police said that the boy attempted to take a selfie from the second floor when his bag came in contact with the escalator railing and he was thrown to the ground floor.

A CCTV footage of the incident released by the police showed the boy falling, from the second floor with his head hitting the ground first. A few visitors rushed to the boy to see what happened. They admitted him to the nearby Royapettah Government Hospital, from where he was transferred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. However, he succumbed to injuries on Friday.

After an autopsy was done, the investigation officer said that Naveen Kanna suffered a crack in his skull in the incident.

Naveen Kanna’s father Sanil Kumar, an auto driver from Tondiarpet, had accused the Express Avenue administration of not having safety measures to prevent such accidents and sought action against the mall authorities. Police are yet to interrogate them.
