Bomb hurled at AIADMK man’s house

A petrol bomb was hurled at the house of a former AIADMK councillor in Madurai on Tuesday. However, police suspect the councillor would have carried out the attack himself for sake of gaining attention as he was denied a seat in the civic poll this time.

Jayakumar, former councillor of Ward 30 in Madurai Corporation complained that while he and his family was sleeping in his house at Tahsildar Nagar, they heard a noise around midnight. Whey they rushed out of the house, they saw flames outside the house and they doused it. They immediately informed the police.

Police carried out an investigation and registered a case. However, police sources said that the manner in which the bomb had exploded showed that it might have been thrown from within the house. Sources said that the councillor might have done so to gain attention before the civic body polls. Earlier in January, two masked men on a motorcycle threw two petrol bombs at the office of Madurai West MLA and Minister for Cooperation Sellur K Raju and AIADMK’s party office.

One bomb exploded at the AIADMK’s office damaging the door and windows on the premises. Five special teams were formed to enquire the incident and arrest those behind the attacks in Madurai. Police suspected intra-party rivalry and detained six persons in the case.

Similarly, a bomb exploded close to the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple following a rivalry among street vendors.
