Chennai: Tension prevailed at Koyambedu after a clash broke out between BJP and VCK cadre on Thursday morning over garlanding the Ambedkar statue on the latter's birth anniversary.

Men of both parties were injured in the clash apart from a few police personnel as they started hurling stones at each other and the situation was brought under control after additional police strength reached the spot.

The incident happened around 11 am soon after VCK leader Tirumavalavan paid respects to the statue located opposite to the bus terminus and left the spot. While BJP cadre waited for their turn, they noticed a few VCK men removing the flag poles. An argument broke out between them leading to the clash, said police.

BJP leader Gayatri Raguram addressing the media from the clash spot argued that Ambedkar is a national leader and added that he cannot be given a restricted identity.

Koyambedu police are investigating about the incident.
