However, a police officer said that the police team did not rob the complainant. “The complainant was consuming alcohol with two friends on Marina beach, behind Kannagi statue, when a patrol team approached them and asked them to stop drinking alcohol in public place. This led to an argument and the complainant was assaulted,” the police officer noted.

Uthama Raja, an employee of Connemara Public Library in Egmore, was at the beach on Thursday around 9.30 pm, when the incident happened.

In his complaint, he claimed that he was sitting and talking with friends when three policemen came. They threatened, assaulted and robbed him of Rs10,000, he had said. He did not mention about consuming alcohol in his complaint. He had also named the police personnel in his complainant. After being assaulted by the police, he went to Royapettah Government Hospital and took treatment for the injuries he suffered on his face.
