Airport deserted as over 200 flights cancelled

The Chennai airport wore a deserted look with more than 200 flights, including 84 international flights, being cancelled with the government directing the grounding of international flights owing to the spread of coronavirus and lack of passengers.

For the past few days, coronavirus scare has made people to avoid unnecessary travels. The government has requested the public to stay indoors as much as possible and imposed stringent travel curbs after the WHO declared the outbreak a pandemic. The number of flight cancellations has been increasing daily, crossing the 200 mark on Saturday. As many as 224 flights, including 84 international flights, were cancelled.


The flights which have the capacity of 178 seats, departed with only less than 30 passengers to Kochi, Delhi and Mumbai as the airlines had no other option. The arrival and departure of the 140 domestic flights from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram, Thoothukudi, Tiruchy, and Coimbatore were cancelled.


The 84 international flights cancelled included those from Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Dubai, Sharjah, Muscat, Doha, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jeddah, Hongkong and Germany.
