The Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation’s (Aavin) plant at Sholinganallur has adopted probiotic technology to increase the production of fermented products at an estimated Rs 9.19 crore. The manufacturing with the use of new technology will commence by the end of August, said Aavin Managing Director Sunil Paliwal. “Now premium products are issued only to Aavin outlets and FROs (Franchise retail outlets), as the production is not enough to supply to the wholesalers,” an official said.
“Now, manufacturing of ice cream manufacture, which was pegged at 1,200 litres daily, has been increased to 15,000 litres daily to be supplied all outlets,” Paliwal added. Meanwhile, the six high-tech Aavin parlours opened in various city locations including Tiruvanmiyur, Anna nagar, Virugambakkam and Ashok Pillar have registered good response and revenue. In addition to its regular products, these outlets also sell pizza, burgers, French fries, vegetable roll and vegetable sandwich.
“Being cost effective, these products ensure good public custom,” Paliwal said. The milk major’s Sholinganallur dairy has converted to solar energy through a CST (Concentrated Solar Thermal) system, replacing furnace oil to process 1 lakh litres of milk daily. “We anticipate savings of about Rs 2.20 lakh annually in addition to reducing carbon foot print,” Paliwal added.
With a similar scheme at a private dairy at Chitale in Maharashtra failing, Aavin ventured into the field with trepidation, said Paliwal. “The Salem dairy’s success in the CST venture at an estimated Rs 1.01 crore to pasteurise 20,000 litres milk daily resulted in Sholinganallur also following suit. The Salem dairy received the CST award from the central government’s NREDA,” Paliwal said.
