4 held for smuggling gutkha in 3 trucks, 2.5 tonnes seized

A special team of Adyar police district seized three mini trucks in which 2.5 tonnes of gutkha products were being smuggled to be distributed to various shops under its jurisdiction.

Deputy Commissioner V Vikraman received a tip-off about gutkha being smuggled and a special team intercepted the vehicles at Indira Nagar and seized the banned tobacco products worth Rs 15 lakh. The owner of the vehicles, Ramasamy (40), and the drivers, Selvaraj (27), Pushparaj (39) and Isakkimuthu (27), were arrested. Investigation revealed that Ramasamy already has similar cases pending against him. All four were remanded in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, Kodungaiyur police arrested five youth in possession of ganja. The accused Mohammed Rasoolullah (21), K Ganesan (19), M Arun (19), N Emmanuel (25) and K Mani (20) were secured based on a tip-off on Tuesday and two kilograms of ganja was seized from them. Police said Ganesan and Arun already have cases pending against them. All five were remanded on Tuesday night.
