The accused was identified as S Ezhumalai (29) of Bashyam Street in Otteri. On Saturday night, Ezhumalai visited a sweet stall in Ayanavaram market and bought sweets. When he gave a Rs 2,000 note, the cashier realised that there was something wrong and scanned the note closely. Sensing trouble, Ezhumalai tried to escape from the spot. After the cashier raised an alarm, passers-by secured and handed him over to the Ayanavaram police. They checked his wallet and seized six more fake notes in Rs 2,000 denomination.

He was remanded in custody and the police sent the fake notes for forensic analysis. The police are also investigating how Ezhumalai got counterfeit currency.

This is the third incident of fake currencies being seized in and around the locality. On November 6, the Kothavalchavadi police arrested a businessman for depositing counterfeit currencies in the cash deposit machine of a private bank. Also, a senior citizen was nabbed for trying to exchange a fake Rs 2,000 note in Ayanavaram.
