The deceased, Dinesh, was an employee of a telecom firm and got married only a year ago. Addicted to online gambling, Dinesh had already lost a huge amount that he borrowed from others by indulging in the habit, the police said. Finally, his parents had to sell one of their properties to settle the debt.

However, the loss he suffered or that the family had to sell a property to arrange the money did not stop him from borrowing more money to continue gambling. Officials said that he borrowed Rs 8 lakh more, all of which he lost just like the previous times.

Frustrated over the repeated losses he suffered, Dinesh hanged himself in his house on Monday. On information, the Red Hills police retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered and further investigation is on. Dinesh’s wife, Saranya (22), is four-month pregnant.

3 Indian firms implead against plea seeking to ban online rummy

Three Indian companies running online rummy games impleaded in a plea which sought the Madras High Court to direct the State and Centre to ban online rummy games with stake, and enact rules to regularise online rummy games without stake.

Expressing its intent to hear the industry, a division bench comprising Justice SM Sundresh and Justice R Hemalatha allowed the impleading plea and posted it for further hearing to Friday. Appearing for the companies, senior counsel PS Raman submitted that the plea sounded as if the online platforms were being operated from abroad though the owners of three leading platforms were from India and due taxes were being paid.
