Assistant jailor Palanivel and head warden Nagarajan were suspended in connection with the case. The murder has raised questions about the security of the inmates. Though it was known that Murali and Saranraj had a history of enmity, they were lodged in the same building, sources said.

Police said the deceased has several cases including three murders and attempted murder cases in 16 police stations pending against him. He was detained under the  Goondas Act recently.

The 34-year-old was murdered with his throat slit open inside the Puzhal prison by a five-member gang, who also chopped off his private parts. A day after the murder, the Prison department on Thursday shifted 18 prisoners to other central prisons across the state.
