According to a Chennai Corporation official, the project would be carried out at a cost of Rs 95 crore, which the civic body won in a national competition conducted among the smart cities in the country.

“The project will be implemented in two phases. During the first phase, we are going to select the schools to be converted into smart schools and decide on facilities to be created. The second will be the implementation phase,” the official added.

The civic body has planned to start identifying the suitable schools during the second week of June.

Like the smart classes created by the civic body, the new smart schools would have multimedia classrooms, apart from children-friendly facilities with attractive paintings on walls. “Even though we are yet to finalise the facilities, the smart schools may have Wi-Fi connections, tablets for each student, smartboards for accessing online resources, and also CCTV monitoring,” the official said.

Presently, the city Corporation maintains 28 smart classrooms in 28 of its schools.
