Siblings make gospel music mainstream

Sister duo Alisha and Amritha Samson speak about their upcoming concert in the city which is interestingly themed on gospel music. They speak about mainstreaming the genre which is often viewed in the religious context, its relevance in today’s society and how they hope it will strike a chord with the contemporary music aficionado.

The Samsons hope their upcoming gospel music concert will be a welcome change to the Carnatic music loving crowd of the city. They say it’s an attempt to mainstream this genre of music which is often relegated to religious ceremonies. It is this limitation which they feel is making it lose its relevance in the popular music scene.

Titled ‘A Squared’, the duo will perform live on February 11, from 6 pm to 8 pm at Backyard. “There are many in the society who are lost, broken, hurt and seek solace. Gospel music will help them a great deal. It is a very healing experience. This genre of Christian music is uplifting, joyous and hopeful. It’s important that we spend time connecting with our creator and with those around us. Gospel music is very much relevant in today’s society and I am sure the next generation will start exploring it,” says Alisha beginning the conversation.

The sisters are performing as part of Backyard’s first anniversary celebrations, which will see the collaboration of several artists in the city.  The siblings, who have collaborated for various music concerts, are excited about this event.

“Chennaiites are always open to various forms of music and I strongly feel that this genre of music shouldn’t be ignored or forgotten. Gospel music is unique and is more meaningful than the kind of music you listen to daily. There is a unique character and most people can connect with it,” she adds.

Alisha also opines that the music we listen to has become shallower. “I hope gospel music will help people get back to meaningful music. Music has always been something that people turn to when they have no one to lean on. Gospel music will give people that shoulder,” she muses. The youngster adds that the genre, as opposed to popular notion, is not restricted to a particular religion.

“Nowhere is it written that gospel music is for Christians alone. Also, it’s one of the oldest genres of music having been around since early 17th century,” says Alisha. In fact, a quick Google search reveals that early rock and roll, R&B, and soul singing were directly influenced by gospel music.

“Gospel is emerging as a genre and impacting people everywhere. It’s making a comeback in the West. I hope things change here as well,” she says.
