However, his intriguing concept and vision didn’t help him to deliver a satisfying film. In fact, as the film progresses, the audience is left in a situation where they need to search for those inspiring moments that usually come along with films of this genre.
Boomerang begins with a guy called Shiva (whose identity wasn’t revealed) being admitted to a hospital, after surviving a disasterous fire accident. Doctors suggest that he undergo a face transplantation surgeries to get rid of the burns and deformities. Witha in few minutes, we get to see Shakthi’s (Atharvaa) facial image on Shiva. He is quite happy with his new look and spends all day roaming around and playing his favourite sport, football, with his friend Gopal (Sathish). There is a scene in the film where even his family members say that his new look is much better than the original. Trouble begins when a local hooligan attempts to murder Shiva at two different places. He realises that his new face has a deadly past and sets out to discover who Shakthi is.
He travels all the way to Tiruchy, along with his girlfriend (Megha Akash) and his friend, Gopal (Sathish) to learn about Shakthi’s family.Shiva meets Maya (Indhuja), an ex-IT employee, who was a good friend of Shakthi’s. She narrates his backstory to Shiva and reveals details about the people responsible for Shakthi’s mysterious death. The second half is all about Shakthi’s inspiring life and how he quit his IT job to help his farming community back home.
Though the film has a lot of interesting elements that can make for perfect action thriller, the screenplay falls flat and is uninspiring. The second half is way too long, familiar and preachy. At one point, the film makes us to recollect some of the scenes from Vijay’s Kaththi, which also deals with a similar issue. The concept of interlinking rivers for the welfare of farmers does strike a chord with the audience, but Kannan’s predictable screenplay failed. Atharva has excelled as both Shiva and Shakthi. His transformation into a mass hero is quite laudable and his dialogues in the second half pack a punch. Both Sathish and RJ Balaji are a big relief and manage to tickle the funny bone with their one-liners. Megha Akash does justice to her role as a short filmmaker and impresses with her performance. Overall, Boomerang is an average watch which could have been made better.
