Whether it’s getting into the mood of the Margazhi or letting people capture the essence of a beautifully draped saree, traditional and fashionable silk sarees are sure to catch one’s eye. One such pioneer in the art of weaving silk threads into creative patterns, talks to us about silk and its deep connection with this season.

Jayasree Ravi, the head designer and owner of Palam Silks, says, “Silk sarees have become the dress code for Margazhi. From singers, dancers and even rasikas, everybody wants to drape themselves in the finest of silk during this season. Keeping that in mind, in 2016, we wanted to weave a silk saree that is close to intricacies of music. We chose five quintessential ragas (Kalyani, Kambhoji, Shankarabharan, Bhairavi, Thodi) and wove their musical notations as borders on silk sarees as a dedication to all carnatic musicians.”

“This year, we went a little bit closer to the Kutchery tradition and wove designs that music patrons can wear to the sabhas. We have woven a scene of a kutchery with musicians seated across the stage with the instruments during their performance, to create the very same visual esplanade of the stage as seen by the audience,” says the designer.

“Chennai’s Margazhi season is world renowned and we wanted to do our part in recognising all the music lovers who have kept this traditional alive for decades. This collection also carries folklore musicians and unique and rare musical instruments in the design palette,” concludes the designer.
