Doctors warn against YouTube videos on weight loss

CHENNAI: In an alarming trend, medical professionals are raising urgent concerns over individuals resorting to hazardous weight-loss methods promoted through unverified online sources, particularly YouTube videos.

The caution follows a tragic incident of a young woman from Madurai, who consumed borax (vengaram), a chemical salt, in a desperate attempt to lose weight after watching online videos.

She subsequently developed severe vomiting and diarrhoea, leading to her death. This case has become a stark example for doctors urging the public to avoid unguided and dangerous shortcuts.

Nutritionist Dr Meenakshi Bajaj of Omandurar Hospital stresses that sustainable weight loss rests on fundamental lifestyle principles. “Tight your lip and shake your hip’ should be the basic mantra,” she advised, emphasising disciplined eating and consistent physical activity. “Finish dinner before 7 pm, ensure adequate sleep, exercise regularly, consume a balanced diet and drink enough water – these are the cornerstone of a healthy weight management.”

Endocrinologist Dr Prasad Rao pointed out that while genetic factors were often discussed, environmental influences and lifestyle changes were primary drivers of today’s obesity rise. “Modern medicine offers many FDA-approved drugs for treatment. The public should consult qualified doctors and undergo proper medical treatment to reduce body weight safely,” he stated, warning against self-prescribed remedies.

Chemistry Professor Sivarama Krishnan explained about the extreme danger of substances like borax. “Borax is an industrial chemical used in products like dishwashing bars and entirely unsuitable for human consumption, whether as food or a supposed medicinal aid for weight loss,” he clarified.

The collective message from healthcare experts is clear: desperation to lose weight rapidly can have irreversible consequences. With effective medical and lifestyle interventions available, they strongly urge individuals to shun online fads and seek only scientifically-backed, supervised treatment plans to safeguard their health and lives.
