K’town’s tryst with Telugu remakes in 2020

Remaking Telugu films to Tamil is not something new to K’Town filmmakers and audience and have garnered positive responses. However, the first half of 2020 will witness as many as half a dozen Telugu films being remade in Tamil.

The Tamil remake of Telugu blockbuster Ninnu Kori (Nani and Nivetha Thomas) will have Atharvaa and Anupama playing lead roles. Vijay Deverakonda’s blockbuster Pellichoopulu will be remade in Tamil with Harish Kalyan and Priya Bhavanishankar in lead cast. GV Prakash too will be seen in the Tamil remake of the Telugu blockbuster Ekkadiki Pothavu Chinnavada titled Aayiram Jenmangal. Talking about the trend, director R Kannan, who is helming the Tamil remake of Ninnu Kori says, “Directing remakes are the most complicated thing. It is because we can experiment quite a lot of things with original scripts. But there will be a lot of comparison with the original. Hence, we should only make minor tweaking in the screenplay when we do the remake and not change the soul of the original. Classic example is when Sethu was remade in Telugu as Seshu, the film went on to become a box office disaster as they had changed the climax. When I wanted to remake Ninnu Kori in Tamil, I had a detailed discussion with Shiva Nirvana about the screenplay and have adapted the same. Anupama’s performance will be on a par with Nivedha Thomas, which is the crux of the film.”

Harish Kalyan will reprise Vijay Deverakonda’s role in the Tamil remake of Pellichoopulu. He says that the film will be a frame-to-frame adaptation of the original. “It was Pellichoopulu that shot Vijay Deverakonda to fame even before Arjun Reddy. We have captured the mood of the film but I haven’t copied Vijay’s style or body language in the film. We have also added quite a few things to cater to the Tamil audience,” he concludes.
