Mild showers bring relief to Chennai, Tamil Nadu amid sweltering heatwave
Over the past two days, parts of the State have been recording moderate to heavy rainfall.

CHENNAI: After soaring heat witnessed for the last few days, the capital city of Tamil Nadu received moderate showers on Wednesday that brought relief from heat and humidity.
Even the maximum temperature is likely to drop as light to moderate rain is expected to occur over a few places in the city and suburbs during the evening and night hours for the next two days. The meteorological department has issued heavy rain warning for 16 districts of Tamil Nadu till May 11.
A cyclonic circulation lies over Tamil Nadu and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, heavy rain is expected to occur over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Karur, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Kallakurichi, Theni, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari for the next three days.
Also, light to moderate rain predicted at a few places with thunderstorm activity and gusty winds with speed reaching 30 kmph to 40 kmph in Tamil Nadu in the coming days.
As far as Chennai and suburbs are concerned, several areas including Tondiarpet, Nungambakkam, Adyar and Mylapore received light to moderate rain on Wednesday.
For the next two days, the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy and light to moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas during evening and night hours.
The summer spell is expected to reduce the temperature level by 2 degree Celsius than usual. The maximum temperature is likely to record around 35 to 36 degree Celsius.
According to RMC, Tamil Nadu received 26 mm of rainfall against the normal rainfall of 77 mm during the summer season from March 1 to May 8, which is 66 percent deficit spells. Only Dindigul district has recorded excess rainfall by 10 percent with 122 mm of rainfall so far.
Meanwhile, as the weather department predicted summer rains for various parts of Tamil Nadu, the state is likely to get a brief relief from heat wave conditions.
The maximum temperature is expected to fall by 2 degree Celsius than normal in the state except interior districts of Tamil Nadu where the mercury is likely to surge by 2 to 4 degree Celsius for the next two days.
