CHENNAI: Shopping malls in the city may face action as Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has warned of enforcement action if the malls fail to take measures to avoid traffic congestion around their establishments.

During a meeting with the representatives of shopping malls, held on Wednesday, CMDA member-secretary Anshul Mishra instructed them to ensure pick-up and drop-off of customers should take place inside the mall premises and not on the roads.

He also warned of action by traffic police, if the malls continue to hinder traffic flow, an official, who took part in the meeting said.

According to the official, traffic snarls are common in front of VR Mall in Anna Nagar and Express Avenue Mall in Royapettah when compared to other malls.

"In this meeting, the Member Secretary, CMDA directed the Mall Owners to take adequate measures, such as regulating the parking spaces in the mall premises and creating additional parking spaces as per the requirement. Further, he has advised to the Mall Owners that the Traffic Marshalls shall be arranged by the Malls concerned by wearing Reflector Jackets and should regulate in front of the Malls, " a CMDA release said.

The shopping mall owners have been instructed to ensure that vehicles entering the shopping mall area do not have to take the entry and exit at the same place, rather the entry of vehicles at the front and the exit of vehicles at the rear.

Also, the owners of the shopping malls have been instructed to find a temporary parking lot, in case of an increase in the number of vehicles coming to shopping malls to ensure that there is no traffic congestion on the road.

On October 7, chief secretary Shiv Das Meena held a meeting with the CMDA and Traffic Police and instructed them to take measures to ensure traffic management near malls.
