One arm of Singaperumal Koil flyover now open, eases Highway congestion
A portion of the flyover on the Tiruchy-Chennai route was opened to traffic earlier this year, but the Chennai-Tiruchy side remained incomplete, leading to continued bottlenecks — particularly during weekends, holidays, and festival seasons.

CHENNAI: After years of waiting, the final stretch of the flyover at Singaperumal Koil on the Chennai-Tiruchy national highway was inaugurated on Sunday evening. With this, a major traffic spot at one of the district’s busiest junctions is finally expected to ease.
Singaperumal Koil has long been a key transit point for thousands of motorists travelling daily between Oragadam, Sriperumbudur, and the southern districts via GST Road. The area is notorious for traffic snarls, primarily due to the railway level crossing that frequently brings traffic to a standstill.
Following repeated requests from the public, the railway FOB work began in 2008. While the railway portion of the flyover was completed in 2011, the highway department’s roadwork and connecting ramps were left incomplete. One arm of the flyover allowed rail passengers to make a turn to head towards Chennai, but the arm that would allow motorists to zoom straight towards Chengalpattu had been pending for a while.
After years of inaction, the project resumed in November 2021, and a budget of Rs 138.27 crore was allocated for the project. In February 2024, the first part of the flyover connecting Oragadam and Sriperumbudur was opened to traffic.
On Sunday evening, in a ceremony led by Chengalpattu District Collector Sheha and State Minister Anbarasan, the remaining part of the flyover linking the Chennai-Tiruchy NH was inaugurated and opened to the public.
With both arms of the flyover now operational, traffic flow through Singaperumal Koil is expected to improve significantly. Vehicles from Oragadam, Appur, and other neighbouring villages heading toward southern districts via the GST Road can now directly access the Chennai-Tiruchy NH without much hassle.
