Gold worth Rs 1.22 crore seized by Chennai Air Customs

In different cases of gold seizures, the element was concealed in various methods to escape the Customs' radar.

CHENNAI: Chennai Air Customs made gold seizures worth 2.8 kilograms which makes up to Rs 1.22 crore, at the Chennai airport on Monday.

In the press release issued today, the Customs department informed that the contraband material were confiscated in two different seizures.

In the first incident, a man from Dubai was intercepted from the Emirates flight by a tip off. "One chain weighing 195 grams of 24k of Gold concealed in his underwear was recovered. Further, Gold in dust form found concealed in cloth layers of undergarments, which resulted of 312 grams of 24k of Gold. Totally, 507 grams of 24k of Gold worth Rs 22.19 lakhs were seized," read the statement.

In the other incident, gold was seized from toilet next to AIU to weighing 2,620 grams in paste form wrapped in adhesive which was stuck on the wall adjoining two toilets.

The total amount of gold recovered adds to 2.8 kilograms which costs Rs 1.22 crore. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
