Corpn adopts resolution to install statue of MK in Saidapet

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation on Tuesday adopted a resolution to install a life-size statue of former chief minister M Karunanidhi in Saidapet.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the council meeting chaired by Mayor R Priya on Tuesday.

Councillor M Krishnamurthy who is also the chairperson of Zone 10 sought the approval of the council to allot land at the junction of Bazzar Street and Anna Salai at Saidapet to install a statue of Karunanidhi. “It is a long pending demand of the ward 142 people,” he said, adding that Karunanidhi represented the Saidapet Assembly constituency between 1967 and 1977.

The Corporation also adopted a resolution to set up three additional dialysis centres at Elango Nagar, Urban Community Health Centre (UCHC), Ambattur Padi UCHC and Semmencheri Urban Primary Health Centre in association with Tanker Foundation with Rotary Club of Madras West and East Trust and Wockhardt Foundation with Rotary Club of Chennai Upscale. Already, the civic body has six dialysis centres.

The civic body has approved the construction of 86 toilet seats at a cost of Rs 3.76 crore in Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School and Chennai Primary School at Jones Road. The CGHSS and CPS Jones Road schools have a combined strength of 3,500 students.

As per norms, the toilet seats and student ratio should be one toilet seat for every 25 students. Thus, 140 toilet seats would be required to meet the needs of the campus.

At present, 83 toilets are available, but 54 are in repairable condition. Out of 140 seats, the remaining 86 seats are required for the construction of the toilet blocks.

The council meeting also approved the Rs 3 crore for attending patches and potholes in the bus route roads using cold-mix injection pothole patching repairing machine. It also approved handing over the contract to Shrusti to construct LPG based crematorium at Moolakkothalam.

Deputy mayor Magesh Kumaar, Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi were also present during the council meet.
