CHENNAI: Ten days after two groups of college students created a ruckus at Egattur railway station near Tiruvallur, attacking each other with stones and weapons, the railway police arrested two city college students on Saturday.

The arrested persons were identified as 19-year-old P Merlin and V Suman alias Suryah.

R Dinesh Kumar (20), a final year commerce student, suffered a head injury during the clash on August 16. He was admitted to the government hospital in Tiiruvallur.

Police sources said that the clash between students was about establishing supremacy on the train route, popularly known as ‘route thala’. An argument between students of two city colleges turned violent and they attacked each other, creating a tense atmosphere in the railway station, much to the chagrin of the commuters.

On seeing a team of cops reach the scene, students dispersed in a hurry. Earlier, police arrested 3 first year college students — V Rahul (19), P Rohit (18) of Kadambathur and P Rahul (19) of Thiruvalangadu, a day after the incident, based on CCTV footages and the videos shot by several fellow students which were uploaded and went viral on social media.

Police said that the investigation is still underway and a few more students will be arrested in connection with the case.

The arrested persons were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
