Unite to join the fight against child labour

Since the government amended the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986, enforcing a ban on employment of children under 14 in any kind of jobs in October 2006, situation has barely changed and child labour continues to flourish in both rural and urban India.

1. The Anti-Child Labour Day in India is an effort to create awareness and educate the citizens about the hardships of the child labourers. It is also an effort to surface the responsibility we hold as social citizens.
2. There are many ways to show support against child labour. It could be by volunteering with NGOs that are working for the cause directly or indirectly, hold an event or campaign to spread awareness and raise funds, or to donate to stop child labour.
3. Four per cent of the urban population of India constitutes domestic workers of which 1 per cent is children. The problems of child domestic workers are generally neglected as the physical and mental abuse happens behind closed doors.
4. According to International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates agriculture and related activities – at 70 percent – are the largest employer of child labour in India.
