D Kumari (52) Caretaker of Jewish cemetery, Mylapore I have been a caretaker of the Jewish cemetery opposite my house for the last 20 years. It is a very special place for my employers—Joseph and David—who have been making all the efforts to preserve it.

I get paid Rs 1,000 per month for the job, which they deposit in the bank. Whenever they visit the place, I get tipped for my work. I always ensure that the place is spic and span. There are not many burials happening here. Since it is empty most of the times, lots of miscreants try to enter the premises. They have now built a wall to ensure there is no trespassing.

So, unlike before, the only problem is the thick overgrowth of grass that I must attend to regularly. I am a single mother and I shoulder the huge responsibility of raising two daughters. I have somehow managed to educate both—they are going to finish school.

It is extremely difficult to raise two girls independently, but I have been doing it, giving my best for them. I have tried all kinds of vocations to earn money.

However, it has been an uphill task. But being a mother, it is not easy to give up. I pray for the day when I don’t have to worry about my daughters’ future. I don’t want them to end up being miserable like me.
